The list of things to do….
July 4, 2006 – 10:36 amIn therory I do enjoy the list of things to do. I enjoy when there is a day where I am checking off an amazing amount of items I had listed. Without Ritalin the lists get longer the sluge and muck pile up faster and it takes a small modern miracle to get three things done.
I really love to get organized, clean, and take care of my family it is just a significant challenge not being medicated.
New strategy.
1. Simplify. I am cutting all possible corners.
2. Modify. My enviornent to be user friendly as possible.
3. Destroy. All unnecessary and unwanted distractions.
Could this be applied to any other strategy other than cleaning…. Possibly. Shoe hangers on the back of my Thing 1’s door act as a small toy holder. I am working on his closet organization.
I love children’s books but book storage is not a favorite list item for me. I am trying to find a fun creative way to store them out of reach so they don’t end up everywhere, after or before naps. I am happy that my son is so enthused about being literate one day. I just wish he would focus that energy into potty training. Put that back on the list of things to do…..purchase more undies for small bum.
New strategy we will see how it works this month.

I had a friend that stored her kids’ books in dishpans that were then stacked on the shelves. She’s the same one that inspired me to organize my kids’ toy area like I did. I did a Wisdom Wednesday on it a while back. Anyhoo, thought maybe I’d pass that along, I don’t use that particular trick of hers, but maybe you could make it work for you.

I saw this idea in Real Simple, have tried it and liked it - using a canvas shoe organizer to stand the books up in, then kids can easily flip through them and pick what they want and easily put them away too!

We have an area in our front/family/living room that houses a small cheapo bookcase with all of the kids books. It’s kind of a nookish area that I have some throw pillows in as well. The book mess mostly stays there, depending on how many reading sessions we’ve had they may migrate to all over the room and down the hall onto mama’s bed. I try to get it to “0″ before going to bed every nite…
In their room they get one large laundry tub for toys, one for dressups and all toy food and toy dishes go in their “kitchenette.” The End.

I love your three way approach!
My toddler’s books are stored in a tub, too. The older ones have the dexterity to put the books back on shelves the regular way.
One thing I’ve done is pack away much of the toys into plastic tubs. Then once a month, we have a toy switch. They get excited again about toys when they haven’t seen them for awhile, and there is less to have to clean up on a daily basis. I have even done this with their books.

We just have a simple small bookshelf in the kid’s rooms. When books get scattered even the smallest can help put them back on the shelf. It doesn’t seem to matter how creative and organized I have tried to be with toy maintenance the outcome is always the same. They play, toys get strung out, they learn to put them back. I generally keep all their toys in their rooms not in our main living spaces so that helps to somewhat contain the messes to their small domains. At the end of the day we take a minute to pick it all back up again.
